President Donald Trump on Thursday established by executive order a Religious Liberty Commission, a panel to be led by members of the clergy and government officials to advise the White House on religious liberty issues.
“Americans need to be reacquainted with our nation’s superb experiment in religious freedom in order to preserve it against emerging threats,” reads the White House memorandum on the commission.
“Therefore, the Federal Government will promote citizens’ pride in our foundational history, identify emerging threats to religious liberty, uphold Federal laws that protect all citizens’ full participation in a pluralistic democracy, and protect the free exercise of religion.”
The memorandum lays out a number of responsibilities for the commission.
The members are tasked with producing a report on religious liberty in America, advising the White House on policy when it comes to issues such as vaccine mandates, military chaplains, and conscience protections in health care, among other things.
The commission will be co-chaired by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson, who served as Housing and Urban Development secretary in the first Trump term.
It will also include Bishop Robert Barron, who heads the Catholic Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota and is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries; the Rev. Franklin Graham, who heads the Samaritan’s Purse charitable relief organization; and Pastor Paula White, who heads the newly created White House Faith Office, among others. The attorney general, the current secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and the assistant to the president for domestic policy are also ex officio members.
