More than 700 flights were delayed at DIA on Thursday as thunderstorms brought high winds, hail and the threat of tornadoes to metro Denver and the Eastern Plains.

More than 700 flights were delayed at Denver International Airport on Thursday afternoon as thunderstorms brought high winds, hail and the threat of tornadoes to metro Denver and the Eastern Plains.

There were 720 delayed and nine canceled flights as of 5 p.m., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.

Arriving flights were delayed by an average of 1 hour and 21 minutes because of a traffic management program for weather, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Southwest Airlines reported the most delays at 236, followed by 198 on United Airlines and 167 on SkyWest.

Flights leaving Denver for San Francisco International Airport also were delayed because of the weather.
