President Trump questions if NFL owners are ‘stupid’ for passing on Buffs QB Shedeur Sanders

President Trump blasted NFL owners on Friday and questioned whether they are “stupid” after Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders did not get selected in the draft’s first round Thursday night.

Trump, posting on his social media network Truth Social, went to bat for the Buffs’ former quarterback and questioned why an NFL team wouldn’t take Colorado head coach Deion Sanders’ son.

“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?” Trump wrote. “Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be ‘picked’ IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”

Over the past two months, Miami quarterback Cam Ward had become the consensus choice as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but even in recent days Sanders was generally expected to be picked in the first round.

Instead, Cleveland and the New York Giants each passed in the top five, New Orleans went a different direction at No. 9 and Pittsburgh took a defensive lineman at No. 21.

The Giants traded back into the first round but took Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart instead of Sanders.

Sanders could well get picked early in Friday’s second round — the Browns hold two of the first four picks of the night and don’t have a long-term answer at quarterback — but it’s also possible his slide will continue.

The railing social media post wasn’t the only shadow Trump cast on the draft’s first round. Former Green Bay Packers great Clay Matthews was given the microphone by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell before the first round started and read what he jokingly called “a message from President Trump” informing teams that “the Bears still suck.”
