Multiple-vehicle crash closes I-70 in both directions near Eisenhower Tunnel

A multi-vehicle crash involving two semitrucks has closed Interstate 70 in both directions near the Eisenhower Tunnel, and there is no estimated time for the road to reopen.

Westbound lanes are closed at the Eisenhower Tunnel and eastbound lanes are closed at Mile Point 205, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.

Initial reports revealed that a semitruck traveling westbound on I-70 collided with another semitruck at about 3:03 p.m. Wednesday three miles east of Silverthorne at Mile Point 209, causing both vehicles to enter eastbound lanes and roll over. One of the semis struck other vehicles.

Emergency services have taken three people to a nearby hospital, but the release did not specify their injuries, how severe the injuries were and whether they were drivers of the semitrucks or drivers or passengers of other vehicles.

Drivers in the area should expect delays as there is no estimated time for reopening the road.

A detour is in place at eastbound milepost 205, rerouting traffic onto U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass. Westbound travelers should use Exit 216 and eastbound travelers should use Exit 205. Eastbound travelers also could detour on Colorado 9 south from Frisco to U.S. 285.

Drivers traveling eastbound should anticipate remaining blocked for a prolonged period while crews remove damaged guardrail and debris.

Another alternative route for eastbound travelers is Colorado 9 south from Frisco to U.S. 285.

Anyone who witnessed the crash should call Colorado State Patrol dispatch at 970-249-4392 and leave their name and number for an investigator to call them back.
