In his first major public appearance since departing the White House, former President Joe Biden, without evidence, accused the Trump administration of trying to deprive Americans of Social Security benefits.
Biden’s detractors, such as President Donald Trump, later called attention to the 82-year-old’s quirky anecdotes and signature sidetracking in the Chicago speech, delivered at a national conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled.
Biden didn’t get to his main theme of his speech until a few minutes into the speech, choosing to first reminisce on his childhood in Delaware and the state’s history of racial segregation.
He got on the topic of segregation in the mid-Atlantic region shortly after acknowledging the presence of Martin O’Malley, a former Baltimore mayor and a former Maryland governor. O’Malley also served briefly as commissioner of the Social Security Administration in the Biden administration.
“Delaware, like Maryland, was one of those states—it was a slave state. We had all the vestiges of what was going on back in the day. We were one of those states,” he said.
He then spoke of witnessing black children being brought on a bus to a separate school, rather than the one he went to—an unfamiliar concept to the young boy who had just moved from Scranton, Pennsylvania.
“I remember pulling in, pulling into the parking lot, and I had never seen—I had never seen hardly any black people in Scranton at the time, and I was only going on fourth grade. And I remember seeing kids going by at the time called ‘colored kids’ on a bus going by,” he said.
Trump reposted a clip of Biden’s digression without comment to his X account Wednesday morning.
A few minutes in, Biden got to his main topic—Social Security, and how he thinks the Trump administration is trying to raid it to pay for tax cuts.
He questioned Elon Musk’s claims of fraudulent Social Security recipients.
“By the way, those 300-year-old folk getting that Social Security, I want to meet them because I’d like to figure out how they do that,” Biden quipped.
“Hell of a thing, man. I’m looking for longevity, ‘cause it’s hell when you turn 40 years old.”
Biden is not a fan of the Trump administration, as he repeatedly emphasized throughout the speech.
“In fewer than 100 days, this new administration has done so much damage and so much destruction. It’s kind of breathtaking it could happen that soon,” the former president said.
“They’ve taken a hatchet to the Social Security Administration, pushing an additional 7,000 employees—7,000!—out the door in that time,” he said.
Biden also expressed his displeasure with the general presence of Silicon Valley tech magnates in the government.
“Why are these guys taking aim at Social Security now?” he asked rhetorically.
“They’re following that old line from tech startups. The quote is ‘move fast, break things.’ Well, they’re certainly breaking things. They’re shootin’ first and aimin’ later.”
