Five people were injured in the multivehicle crash that closed Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel for nearly eight hours this week, according to the State Patrol.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. Wednesday when a semitrailer traveling west lost its brakes and rear-ended another semitrailer, sending both vehicles off the left side of the interstate. The second truck rolled before coming to rest on the median.

The first truck also hit an eastbound Toyota RAV-4 and a Toyota Tacoma during the crash. Four people were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, and one person, the driver of the second truck, sustained life-threatening injuries.

State troopers cited the truck driver who caused the crash, a 57-year-old Texas man, for careless driving causing injury, according to the agency.

The State Patrol is still investigating the crash, and anyone who witnessed it but has not spoken to investigators can contact dispatch at 970-249-4392.
