In remarks about President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his House counterpart, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, predictably excoriated the president’s agenda, but didn’t provide a clear strategy by which they would resist him.
The two New York Democrats accused Republican congressmen of going along with Trump’s agenda to the detriment of the country, but did invite Republicans to resist Trump.
They were joined by dozens of Democrat congressmen on the steps of the Senate.
“Know that as we fight on the inside, we need you to fight on the outside,” said Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., a generality that echoed the vague Democrat strategy presented throughout the news conference.
“And we will prove once again that this is the United States of America, and at the end of the day, it’s the people who have the last word,” he said.
“We’re here to offer a different path. We’re here to fight for the America that Americans want,” said House Democrat Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass.
But the news conference ended with few specifics on how Democrats plan to resist Trump and his agenda without control of the House, Senate, or White House.
Tellingly, the Democrats left the lectern without giving reporters an opportunity to ask questions.
Both Schumer and Jeffries have dodged questions about whether they support Michigan Democrat Rep. Shri Thanedar’s articles of impeachment against Trump.
In an interview on CNN this week, Schumer expressed neither approval or disapproval of impeaching Trump if Democrats win back Congress in the 2026 midterms.
“Look, it’s too far away to even judge,” the New York senator said.
When Jeffries was asked about Thanedar’s impeachment articles at a press conference Tuesday, he simply replied, “I haven’t talked to him about it,” and moved on.
