Financial questions continue to hover over the Biden family, even with former President Joe Biden three and a half months out of office.
The 46th president’s daughter, Ashley Biden, founded the Women’s Wellness Spa(ce) in 2023. The nonprofit tax-exempt organization says it serves women who have experienced trauma. It failed to report a total of $500,000 in donations in its first year to the Internal Revenue Service, according to watchdog group the National Legal and Policy Center.
One of the unreported donations came from a nonprofit affiliated with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The other one came from a left-leaning organization aligned with Silicon Valley. Biden’s organization is in Philadelphia.
This prompted the watchdog group to file two IRS complaints.
“It may be part of the Biden DNA,” Paul Kamenar, legal counsel for the National Legal and Policy Center, told The Daily Signal.
The two big unreported donors were the Archewell Foundation, associated with Prince Harry and Markle, as well as the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Each contributed $250,000 to the Biden-run organization.
Biden’s organization reported its total contributions for 2023 were $170,296 with total assets of $155,847.
“With the support from donors, we have made amazing strides and addressed an underserved and vulnerable demographic of women,” Biden is quoted saying on the Women’s Wellness Spa(ce) website.
The National Legal and Policy Center filed a first complaint with the IRS in May regarding the Archewell Foundation’s donation to the organization. Last week, the center made a supplemental complaint regarding the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Kamenar wrote the complaints to Robert Malone, director of the IRS’ tax-exempt organizations division.
Even if the Women’s Wellness Spa(ce) asserts it only had pledges in 2023 and did not have the cash in hand until 2024, the pledges are supposed to be reported to the IRS in the year they are pledged, Kamenar said.
“The IRS rules require reports to disclose pledges of donations,” he stated.
The Archewell Foundation’s 2023-2024 impact report called itself a “founding partner and supporter of Ashley Biden’s Women’s Wellness Spa(ce), a trauma-informed wellness center for women in north Philadelphia.”
“Drawing from her experience with the criminal justice system, Biden’s initiative is inspired by her work with Mural Arts’ Women’s Reentry Program, providing support and opportunities for formerly incarcerated women,” the foundation’s report continued.
With Joe Biden out of power, Kamenar said he doubts donors will have the incentive to try to curry favor with donations to the Ashley Biden-run group.
“Her apparent violation is nowhere near as what her brother Hunter was involved in,” Kamenar said.
Hunter Biden, the former president’s son, was convicted last year in a tax evasion case as well as on federal firearm charges. Early this year, when Joe Biden was still president, he pardoned Hunter Biden before leaving office. On his last day in office, Biden also issued pre-emptive pardons to his two brothers, Frank Biden and James Biden (and wife Sara), and to his sister, Valerie, and her husband, John Owens. He did not issue a pre-emptive pardon for Ashley Biden.
The Women’s Wellness Spa(ce) did not respond to inquiries from The Daily Signal on Wednesday and Thursday.
A staffer with the organization’s accounting firm, MB Advisors, referred questions to an email address. No one from the firm responded to inquiries sent to the email address on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Daily Signal also reached out to the press office of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and asked why it would donate to a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia. The organization cast itself as a local charity on its website.
“As a community foundation, SVCF brings together the resources and skills of donors, businesses, government, and community members to address the most pressing challenges in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties,” the foundation’s website says.
The Archewell Foundation’s website does not list contact information, but The Daily Signal reached out to email addresses listed elsewhere for the organization but has not heard back as of publication time.
