Avs’ Cale Makar could be a witness in sex assault trial

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar was named as a prospective witness Tuesday in the sexual assault trial of five members of Canada’s 2018 World Junior Championship hockey team.

The five players who are accused — Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart and Michael McLeod — all pleaded not guilty Tuesday, the opening day of the trial. Makar was one of more than a dozen teammates of the accused on Canada’s 2018 WJC team named as prospective witnesses.

The trial is being held in London, Ontario, where the incident occurred at a hotel following a Hockey Canada event. It is scheduled to last for about eight weeks.

Makar has said on multiple occasions that he was not there, was not part of the incident and has cooperated with Hockey Canada’s investigation into the matter. A spokesman for the Avalanche said the organization does not have any information yet about what Makar’s responsibilities as a prospective witness might entail.
